Some vehicles fly down the highway, while others are dirt-track specialists. This activity will help you identify the best path for a vehicle, depending on whether it has better on‑road or off‑road performance.

In Manual Mode, you can adjust the speed by dragging the slider under each speedometer, and you can change the on-road (red) and off-road (blue) distances by dragging the yellow dot on the course. Alternatively, you can enter values in the boxes for either speed or distance.
In Random Mode, either speed or distance will be chosen randomly, depending on your selection. You will then be able to adjust the other parameter. For instance, if you choose ON‑Road Speed = OFF‑Road Speed, then values for the speed will be selected by the computer, but you will be able to change the distances.
Click the GO button to start the race. The red box on the side shows the on‑road time, and the blue box shows the off‑road time. The yellow box shows the total time, and the yellow box will blink orange to indicate the winner of the race.

Choose Random Mode, and select the option for ON‑road speed < OFF‑road speed.
- What is the best path for a vehicle that is faster off‑road?
In Manual Mode, adjust the sliders so that the ON‑Road speed is 80 and the OFF‑Road speed is 40.
- What is the best path for these speeds?
- What is the best path if the ON‑Road speed is 60 and the OFF‑Road speed is 30?
- Move the sliders to another set of numbers such that the ON‑Road speed is twice the OFF‑Road speed. What is the best path?
- In general, what is the best path if the ON‑Road speed is twice the OFF‑Road speed?
What is the ratio of ON‑Road speed to OFF‑Road speed when the best path requires driving half as far on‑road as off‑road?
