Illuminations: Hospital Locator

Hospital Locator

Community planners are trying to find the best location for a new medical center that is equally convenient to residents of Helena, MT, Boise, ID, and Salt Lake City, UT. Where should the center be placed so that it is equidistant from all three cities?

Instructions

Drag Hospital to various locations. The distance from the hospital to each city will be displayed.

The Show/Hide Bisector buttons display bisectors for each side of the triangle. The Show/Hide Circle buttons display a circle with the hospital at the center; the point on the circumference of this circle can be used to adjust its size.

When the applet initially loads, the distances between Helena, Boise, and Salt Lake City are true to life. However, to investigate other locations of cities, these three points can be moved by dragging them to other locations.

Exploration

Where should the hospital be located so that it is mutually convenient to all three cities?
  • How are the bisectors of the sides related to this problem?
