Illuminations: Shape Sorter

Shape Sorter

A rhombus has four congruent sides. A rectangle has four congruent angles. But a square has four congruent sides and four congruent angles. Using a Venn diagram, the relationship would look like this:

What other relationships can be described using Venn diagrams?

Instructions

Begin by selecting the type of Venn diagram that you would like to use by clicking on the Diagrams button. Then, select labels for each set (circle).
The Diagrams button allows you to select various arrangements of Venn diagrams, including those with two or three circles.
The Shape button allows you to place shapes in the sorter. Click this button, then move the pointer onto one of the Venn diagrams. Click again to place the shape. When a shape is placed, a new shape will automatically appear until all available shapes have been placed.
Use the Arrow button to select shapes and move them after they have been placed.

To start over, simply choose a new Venn diagram arrangement, using the Diagrams button.

Exploration

Choose labels for a two‑region diagram so that no shapes will be placed in the overlapping region.
  • What relationship exists between the labels for each region?

Can you find labels for a three‑region diagram so that each of the seven regions will contain at least one shape?
  • What relationship exists between the labels?
