Illuminations: Junior Architects

Junior Architects

In this unit, students learn the major concepts such as using basic linear measurement, understanding and creating scale representations, and exploring perimeter and area measurement as they design their clubhouses. In addition, they identify, compare, and analyze attributes of two- and three-dimensional shapes and develop geometry vocabulary.

Math Content

In this unit, students will:
  • Identify two- and three-dimensional shapes.
  • Determine perimeter and area.
  • Create two-dimensional blueprints.
  • Use a scale drawing to construct a three-dimensional model.

Prerequisite Knowledge

Students should have some prior experience with perimeter and area.

Individual Lessons

Lesson 1 - Getting to Know the Shapes

In this lesson, students discover the uses of geometry and measurement in the world of architecture as they are introduced to the clubhouse project.

Lesson 2 - Finding Perimeter and Area

In this lesson, students develop strategies for finding the perimeter and area for rectangles and triangles using geoboards and graph paper. Students learn to appreciate how measurement is a critical component to planning their clubhouse design.

Lesson 3 - Creating a Two-Dimensional Blueprint

In this lesson, students draw a two-dimensional blueprint of their clubhouse using graph paper.

Lesson 4 - Constructing a Three-Dimensional Model

In this lesson, students build a three‑dimensional model from their two‑dimensional blueprint. In addition, they solve problems related to constructing and decorating their clubhouse.
