Illuminations: Accessing and Investigating Population Data

Accessing and Investigating Population Data

This cluster of Internet Mathematics Excursions describes activities in which students can use census data available on the Web to examine questions about population. Working on such activities, students also formulate their own questions and use the mathematics they are studying to address these questions. They can propose and justify conclusions that are based on data and design further studies on the basis of conclusions or predictions.

Math Content

Students will:

  • analyze population projections for the United States
  • describe the shape and important features of that data set, with an emphasis on how the data are distributed over time
  • formulate questions, construct data tables, and display the relevant data in a graph
  • justify their conclusions and design further studies based on their information

Individual Lessons

Lesson 1 - National Population Projections

In this activity, students examine the United States Census Bureau Web site to investigate population projections from 1990-2100. Using the five provided pyramids, students analyze the data to determine how the population is distributed over time, and explain what factors might contribute to these trends.

Lesson 2 - State Population Projections

<>In this activity, students examine the United States Census Bureau Web site to investigate projections of the total population of states from 1995-2025. Using the provided data, students will analyze statistics from five states of their choice, develop specific research questions using the data, and create three graphs to compare and contrast the information.
