In this unit, students become real business owners! In the first lesson, students collaborate to develop an enticing product and are given $1000 which they must budget to cover the cost of real estate, advertising, and stocking their stores. In the second lesson, students participate in "Selling Day!" and try to make a profit from their debit card wielding classmates who are looking for the best deals. Students' number sense and problem solving strategies are refined as groups compete for the title "Money Makers!"
Individual Lessons
Lesson 1 - Building a Business In the first part of this lesson, students start a business from the ground up! Students collaborate to develop an enticing product and are given a $1000 budget in which to start their business. Students participate in a live auction of real estate locations within the classroom, determine the wholesale prices of various products, and work together to develop an advertising campaign all to prepare for the big day- selling day! Lesson 2 - Savvy Sellers and Spenders This lesson places students in the shoes of a real business owner. Students have chosen the products they want to sell, rented locations, and prepared advertising; now they get to experience the thrill of the sell as they work to entice other students to spend their $200 on their store's merchandise. Students experience real-world applications of the addition and subtraction of decimals while also learning what it means to be a "smart consumer."
