In this lesson, we share a series of tasks that can support students to order and compare signed numbers and develop multiple ways to reason productively about integer addition and subtraction.
6-8
In this lesson, students practice decision-making skills leading to a
better understanding of choice versus chance and building the
foundation of mathematical probability.
Pre-K-2
E
xplore
the relationship between pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
3-5
Refine your number sense
and problem solving strategies as groups compete for the
title "Money Makers!"
6-8
In this lesson, students develop number sense through a series of three hands-on activities. Students explore the following concepts: the magnitude of a million, fractions between 0 and 1, and the effect of decimal operations.
Pre-K-2
Students
use coin blocks, a
concrete representation of coins, to compose and decompose numbers by counting
money. They also use an interactive tool to practice the same skills
pictorially.
3-5
Students compute with whole numbers and and decimals
as they make recommendations for buying an aquarium for the class. Students
research the various materials needed for the aquarium and make plans based on
their findings. They solve the problem while working within a budget.
Pre-K-2
Your home team can set the stage for students to make math connections. Students will record wins and losses in different formats to discover connections between many of the concepts taught earlier in the year. This lesson will provide daily and weekly practice with patterns, addition and subtraction equations, number models and math communication.
Pre-K-2
In this lesson, students will play the role of a consumer as they learn how to use different combinations of coins to make money amounts up to 25 cents. Students will earn money and save it in their piggy banks until they have the exact amount to purchase an item of their choice.
3-5
This second lesson places students in the shoes of a real business owner. Students have chosen the products they want to sell, rented locations, and prepared advertising; now they get to experience the thrill of the sell as they spend their $200 on stores' merchandise(s). Students experience real-world applications of adding and subtracting decimals while learning what it means to be a smart consumer.
