M&Ms: Line Plots and Graphing

Resource Type: Lessons

In this lesson, students are given individual-size bags of M&Ms and asked to estimate how many M&Ms are in their bag. They predict how many of each color they have, then actually count them and compile the results across the class, including making a graphical representation. They can then make various comparisons and answer some interesting questions. Finally, they can eat the M&Ms! The activity assumes that students can compute various measures of central tendency, including mean, median, and mode. The activity should engage students in the kind of real-world use of data analysis that helps them see the relevance of what they are studying. It encourages the development and evaluation of predictions that are based on data, as well as comparisons of various statistical methods. The Web page includes complete directions for carrying out the activity, including worksheets for the students to use, and a range of extensions and follow-up activities. Note that some of the extensions require computer software. Finally, the page includes pictures of the activity being used with a class and sample results to help the teacher better picture what will happen.
