Archimedes Laboratory

Resource Type: Tools

Archimedes' Laboratory invents, creates, and develops hands-on thinking games that help teach mathematical applications. Essentially, the site is a conglomeration of games and online activities that are challenging and/or “brain teasers.” While much of the content is too advanced for the 3-5 grade levels or would be difficult to incorporate into a math lesson, a careful search will reveal a number of activities appropriate for this level. For example, the “Vanish Cards” and the “Twins Maze” activities may be useful for students to develop spatial sense. "Magic Cards" might be used for problem solving; students are challenged to think about why the computer always "knows" which card he or she has previously chosen. This Web site is very interesting and may serve as an option for students to explore during free time. The resources are available in English, French and Italian. It should be noted that this Web site also provides resources for sale and may include ads to promote items.
