Algebriac Factoring

Resource Type: Lessons

This Web site contains several parts for the lesson. First, there is a short glossary defining the terms to later be used in the lessons. Next, there is a short activity using algebra tiles to make sure the students understand how to use them correctly. The main activity is how to multiply binomials together, by using the algebra tiles. Then, there are three procedures that follow using the algebra tiles to multiply (a+b)2, (a+b)(a-b), and (a-b)2. Next, there is section on understanding factoring through geometry and a class activity to go along with it. Last, there is a homework assignment that can be given to the students for them to practice more factoring. All of these activities lead to students being able to see how binomials are multiplied and why the answers make sense. The algebra tiles are a hands-on way for students to be able to attain this understanding for themselves.
