This online activity is an excellent opportunity for students to practice and develop number sense and their understanding of equations. Children often will have a difficult time interpreting and understanding equality when presented in the form “2+3=1+4”. Balancing activities, such as this one, may clarify and deepen understandings of equality, which may add to algebraic reasoning development. Teachers should emphasize the translation of the blocks into equations and may want to supplement the activity with hands-on manipulatives. Additionally, teachers may want to ask their students to predict what the equations will be if they chose each of the alternatives provided.
