This Web site would be an interesting addition to a math lesson about place value, demonstrating the base 20 number system used by the Mayas thousands of years ago. In addition to demonstrating how the Mayans wrote their numbers, the page also discusses how addition and subtraction might be performed using their number system.
If you have a Java-enabled browser, then you can use an interactive number converter provided on the site, which converts base-10 numbers to the Mayan numbers. You can also add one or subtract one to see Mayan-style counting (up or down). This page is part of a larger collection of resources about Mayan astronomy and culture, which provides potential connections to other disciplines.
