Where's Okta?

Where's Okta?

Okta, the Calculation Nation® superhero, is missing! He got so caught up exploring Illuminations resources and activities that he seems to have gotten a little lost.

Okta - Where Am I?

You can help find him! Images of Okta can be found throughout the Illuminations site. Your mission — if you choose to accept it — is to identify all the places on the Illuminations website where Okta is hiding. Simply scour the 602 lessons and 106 activities on Illuminations and see if you can find him. (Note: For this contest, the only acceptable images show Okta holding a sign that says, "You've Found Me!") When you do, note the URL (the web address starting with http:// that appears in your web browser), and then submit your entries via the Where's Okta Entry Form.

Clues

Okta is visiting sixteen different pages on the Illuminations website (http://illuminations.nctm.org). If you need a little help finding him, be sure to like “NCTM Illuminations” on Facebook or join “Learning Math” at the Thinkfinity Community (http://thinkfinity.community.org) to receive exclusive clues.

Contest Rules and Information

  • Only one submission per person.
  • All entries must be submitted by April 8, 2011.
  • Only images showing Okta holding a sign that says, "You've Found Me!" are acceptable for this contest. Other images of Okta appearing on the site will not count.
  • To enter multiple URLs into the form, you have two options:
    1. Open the Where's Okta Entry Form, enter your contact information, and then begin your hunt for Okta in a new window/tab of your browser. As you find Okta, copy-and-paste the URLs into the form. You can use the Check Answers button to find out how many of your answers are correct. When you think you can find no more, click Submit. Note: You will not be able to save your entries in this form, so if you think that you might want to look for Okta during more than sitting, choose Option #2…
    2. As you find Okta on various pages, save the URLs to a Word document. When you think you can find no more, open the Where's Okta Entry Form, enter your contact information, copy-and-paste the URLs into the form, use Check Answers to find out how many of your answers are correct, and then click Submit.

The number of entries is based on the triangular numbers. That is, you will receive 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + … + n entries if you submit n correct URL’s. So, if you submit two correct URL’s, you will receive 1 + 2 = 3 entries, but if you submit eight correct URL’s, you will receive 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 = 36 entries.

Prizes

From all entries, three winners will be drawn at random. Only one prize per entrant, even if multiple correct answers are submitted.

  • Two winners will each receive $50 credit good for products from the NCTM bookstore.
  • One grand prize winner will receive $50 for the NCTM bookstore as well as a FlipTM Camera.

Good luck, and happy Okta hunting!
