Shape Sorter Tool
Sort shapes according to their properties using Venn Diagrams

Shapes have many different properties such as the lengths of their sides, measures of interior angles, and symmetry. This tool allows you to use a Venn diagram model to sort shapes based on their properties.

Instructions

  1. Begin by selecting the type of Venn diagram that you would like to use by clicking on .
  2. Click on the labels for each set (circle) to change the description of the set.
  3. Start to place shapes by clicking on . Move the mouse to the Venn diagram, position the first shape and then click the mouse. A new shape will appear after each click until the available shapes are all placed.
  4. Use the arrow button to select shapes and move them after you have placed them.
  5. To start over, simply begin with step 1.

Activity

Begin with a Venn diagram of two overlapping circles. Select a different condition for each circle such as "All acute angles" and "No lines of Symmetry". Place all available shapes.

  1. How many shapes are there? How many shapes are in each region of the Venn diagram?

  2. Suppose that there were 6 items in one circle and 11 items in another circle. How many items could be in the intersection of the two circles? What would be the maximum number of items in a circle but not in the intersection?
  3. For each of the Venn diagrams, give an example of a set of conditions that make sense for that diagram.

  4. Give an example of a set of conditions that does not make sense for each Venn diagram.
