Sound Sketch

How do computers represent sound?

Sound can be measured and quantified in many different ways. Sheet music is one way to represent a series of sounds. MP3 players and computers use a different representation to store a sound. This activity includes software that allows you to sketch and quantify sound using two different representations.

Instructions

1. Listen to the recorded song by clicking on the listen button. To stop any sound, press the listen button.

2. Using the pencil and different colors from the color menu to draw a picture that represents the sound over time.

Use the shift key on the keyboard to draw perfect horizontal lines.

Click on the erase button twice to erase the entire sketch.

3. There are two ways to play your sketch.

Listen to your sketch by pressing the Musical Staff button.

Then listen to your sketch by pressing the computer button.

Which method best reflects your intended picture?
