Spiders Have 8 Legs

Pre-K-2
Students represent number eight in writing and with a variety of manipulatives. They will construct sets of 8 by cutting 8 strips of paper and counting 8 pretzel sticks that represent spider legs. They will also use 8 plastic spiders to show 8 with a ten frame and count on from a given number to make 8.

Balancing Act

Pre-K-2
Problems such as those in this activity help develop what students already know in preparation for writing equations and learning ways to solve for variables. Students use mathematical models to explore quantitative relationships. When presented with pictures of pan balances with one or more objects in each pan, they communicate relationships between the weights of the objects by comparing the balanced and unbalanced pans.

Get the Turtle to the Pond

Pre-K-2
This activity provides opportunities for creative problem solving while encouraging young students to estimate length and angle measure. Using the Turtle Pond Applet, students enter a sequence of commands to help the turtle get to the pond. Children can write their own solutions using LOGO commands and input them into the computer. The turtle will then move and leave a trail or path according to the instructions given.

Mouse=Mouse: Using a Book to Explore Variable and Equality

Pre-K-2
In the book Balancing Act by Ellen Stoll Walsh, two mice find a teeter-totter and have a fun time balancing each other. When more animal friends come along to join them, they find their teeter-totter unbalanced. This hands-on lesson uses the book as an introduction to the concept that both sides of an equation need to be equal and balanced in order to use the "equal to" symbol; otherwise the "not equal to" symbol must be used. In addition, students use pictures and symbolic letters to represent variables in an equation.

Coin Blocks: Counting Money with Value-Sized Blocks

Pre-K-2
Students use coin blocks, a concrete representation of coins, to compose and decompose numbers by counting money. They also use an interactive tool to practice the same skills pictorially.

Measuring Me

Pre-K-2
Students use yarn to measure lengths such as arm span and height. This gives the students practice measuring with nonstandard units. Pairs of students also compare their height and arm spans. They practice problem-solving and reasoning skills by discussing why there are similarities and differences between the lengths of yarn that represent arm spans and height.

Puzzling Relationships

Pre-K-2

Puzzles provide excellent opportunities for students to apply spatial relationships in an entertaining and meaningful way. In the first part of this lesson, the students use concrete materials to develop the skills needed to work with interactive tangram puzzles in the second part of the lesson. The students also further develop their understanding of spatial relationships and develop problem-solving skills.

Once students complete puzzles using concrete materials, introducing them to virtual puzzles enables them to experience turns, rotations, slides, and spatial relationships in a powerful way. These transformations are more apparent in a virtual environment than when using concrete tools.
