Multiple-Square Repeating Patterns

In this activity, students create and analyze repeating patterns using pattern units of three, four, and five squares. They predict how patterns with different numbers of squares will appear when repeated in a grid, and check their predictions. Students investigate similarities and differences between the rows, columns, and diagonal patterns created with each pattern unit.

Different Representations

In this activity, students create patterns using connecting cubes and describe various patterns they find in different sequences of cubes. Students explore and describe connecting patterns, and extend their patterns using a sequence of sounds and shapes. Students investigate various ways to interpret the same sequence of cubes by exploring ways to describe patterns translating from one representation to another.

Repeating and Growing Patterns

In this activity, students create and explore more complex patterns such as "growing patterns" which have related but different relationships to "repeating patterns". Students form generalizations, analyze, and describe growing patterns using connecting-cubes, and explore what happens when growing patterns "double" or "split."

Block Pounds

Students explore the use of variables as they solve for the weights of objects using information presented in pictures. They model situations that involve adding and subtracting whole numbers, using objects, pictures, and symbols.

Tangram Puzzles

In this activity, students choose a picture and use all seven tangram pieces to fill in the outline. They describe and visualize what figures look like when they are transformed through rotations, reflections, or translations, and are put together or taken apart in different ways. This activity helps students to develop their spatial memory and spatial visualization skills, to recognize and apply transformations, and to become more precise in their use of vocabulary about space. Students use an internet-based tool to explore tangram puzzles.

Eye to Eye

Students learn to pose mathematical questions about themselves and their surroundings through class. They gather data about eye color from their classmates and another class within their school. They organize this data to answer questions.

Baby Weight

In this lesson, students work with data to complete an organized chart by doubling or halving numbers. Then, they compare data using vertical and horizontal bar graphs.

High Temperature

In this lesson, students complete a chart by adding or subtracting from a given value, use graphs to compare two categories of information, and identify number patterns.

Skin Weight

In this lesson, students complete a chart by multiplying or dividing a given value, compare two categories in a line graph, and identify number patterns.

Whale Weight

In this lesson, students investigate relationships between numbers, identify number patterns,
represent the information in graphic chart form, and generalize the results of an investigation. Specifically, students explore the relationship between a whale's length and its weight.
