In this lesson, students will integrate science and math, exploring how neutralization reactions can help us understand that the sum of any number and its additive inverse is zero.

This lesson helps students clarify the relationship between the shape of a graph and the movement of an object. Students explore their own movement and plot it onto a displacement vs. time graph. From this original graph, students create a velocity vs. time graph, and from there create an acceleration vs. time graph. The movement present and how to interpret each type of graph is emphasized through the lesson, which serve as an excellent introduction to building blocks of calculus.

property at a time. In the context of a game, students move from a
simple description of shapes to an analysis of how properties are
related. This lesson was adapted from an article which appeared in the
October, 1998 edition of
Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School.

In this lesson,
students explore the concept of genetics and inheritance. The lesson focuses on
sickle cell anemia, a genetic disease that is dependent on a recessive
trait. Students will perform data collection and analysis of the probability
of a child of two sickle trait parents inheriting sickle cell anemia. To do
this, they play a game that models how the inheritance of a disease works from
parents’ genes. Later, students construct family trees with probability to
determine the genotypes of family members.
