Pre-K-2
Go on an exciting measurement hunt around the classroom in search of items that are longer than, shorter than, and the same size as their piece of yarn. Pairs of students compare the length of their piece of yarn to objects around the classroom. They find and record at least one object that is longer than, one that is shorter than, and one that is the same size as their piece of yarn.

Need a pentagonal pyramid that's six inches tall? Or a number line that goes from ‑18 to 32 by 5's? You can create all those things and more! Place the images you want, then export it as a PDF or as a JPG image.
Pre-K-2
Students use the knowledge and skills gained from previous lesson by placing yarn strips appropriately on 4' × 3' strips of paper and drawing around them to create a map of their body. Then the students use directional and positional words to describe their body map.

This activity provides opportunities for creative problem solving while
encouraging young students to estimate length and angle measure. Using
the Turtle Pond Applet,
students enter a sequence of commands to help the turtle get to the
pond. Children can write their own solutions using LOGO commands and
input them into
the computer. The turtle will then move and leave a trail or path
according to the instructions given.
Pre-K-2, 3-5, 6-8
Focus
on patterns and relations
that can be developed from the exploration of balance, mass, length of
the mass arm, and the position of the fulcrum.
Pre-K-2
Use multiple materials and models to help students explore
measurement.
Pre-K-2
Build skills for
measuring with non-standard units and describing, naming, interpreting,
and representing relative positions in space.
Pre-K-2
Consider how this estimation activity provides
an opportunity for the student with Down's Syndrome to participate.
Pre-K-2
Work in groups to share ideas.
Pre-K-2
Through
the course of the lessons, students are exposed to algebra, measurement, and data
analysis concepts.
