M & M candies are an excellent tool for teaching probability and statistics. This particular lesson focuses on collecting frequency data on the various colors of M & M’s in a small bag. Students will sort, count, record, and use their data to construct pictographs and bar graphs. This fun, hands-on activity allows students to practice counting skills, examine different representations of data and also reason and predict information associated with the likelihood of a given color in other bags. Teachers may also want to visit the M&M Web site for statistics about the color frequencies and other interesting candy facts.
