Pre-K-2, 3-5, 6-8
Participate in activities to analyze information represented
graphically.
6-8, 9-12
In this lesson,
students explore the concept of genetics and inheritance. The lesson focuses on
sickle cell anemia, a genetic disease that is dependent on a recessive
trait. Students will perform data collection and analysis of the probability
of a child of two sickle trait parents inheriting sickle cell anemia. To do
this, they play a game that models how the inheritance of a disease works from
parents’ genes. Later, students construct family trees with probability to
determine the genotypes of family members.
6-8
Explore
the mathematics of the electoral college, the system used in this country to
determine the winner in a presidential election.
6-8
Develop students' understanding of ratio, proportion, greatest common factor and
least common multiple.
6-8
Develop
students' understanding of ratio, proportion, greatest common denominator and least
common multiple.
6-8
Use the theme of games to develop concepts of measurement and statistics.
6-8
Explore
theoretical and experimental probability and the relationship between them.
6-8
Deal with data to complete an organized chart, and create and interpret graphs to generalize a rule.
3-5, 6-8
Develop number sense in and around the shopping mall.
3-5, 6-8
When the nine justices of the Supreme Court meet, they greet one another
with a handshake to show harmony of purpose, even though their views
may differ. How many handshakes occur? In general, how many handshakes
occur when there are n people?
