This lesson provides students an opportunity to assess their understanding of mathematical vocabulary as they relate to key concepts from the five content areas. Through the use of a familiar game format, Bingo, students will identify numbers 0‑75 that correspond to mathematical descriptions from math vocabulary clue cards.

This grades 6-8 activity focuses on interpreting and creating graphs that are functions of time. The first two activity sheets focus on graphs of time vs speed. The third and fourth activity sheets look at how many times an event occurred in a specific amount of time. These activity sheets are appropriate for students who have not taken algebra yet. In the following grades 6-8 lesson, students participate in activities in which they focus on the uses of numbers. The activities explore how students use numbers in school and every day settings as a way for students and the teacher to get to know each other at the beginning of the school year.

This lesson focuses on forming numbers which meet specific requirements. Careful reading of information and understanding of mathematical language are important to finding appropriate solutions. Using the problem-solving strategies of looking for patterns and establishing an organized list will aid students in finding all the possible solution sets.

In this grades 6‑8 lesson, students are encouraged to discover all of the combinations for a given situation. They use problem-solving skills (including elimination and collection of organized data) to draw conclusions. The use of higher-level thinking skills (synthesis, analysis, and evaluations) is the overall goal.

Using the online game Deep Sea Duel, students play a card game against Okta. The objective is to choose cards so that some subset of three cards within their hand has a particular sum. Students will play several variations of the game, attempt to identify a winning strategy, and compare the game to other games that they know.

This lesson invites students to investigate the patterns when a "plus sign" (a cross-shaped arrangement of five squares) is placed on the board in various locations. Students will conjecture about the pattern of the five displayed numbers, the sum of the five numbers, and any other patterns that they notice. Students may also explore similar patterns when other shapes, such as a 2 × 1 rectangle, are placed on the hundreds board.
6-8, 9-12
Students will use vertical movement of an elevator to evaluate signed number expressions.
The idea behind the method of adding and subtracting signed integers offered in this lesson and the next is that the number of rules that students have to memorize and the amount of understanding are minimal, while the underlying concepts are not trivialized.
